- Patient who has indicated for surgery
- Patient who cannot go to the bathroom him self
- Patient with spinal cord injury
- Patient who dignosed with dementia
- Spina biafida
- Urinary sphincter dysfunction
- Prosted inlargment
Types of urinary catheter
Indwelling catheters:- It also known as folly's catheter.These types of catheter have a baloon that inflate into the urinary bladde by use of sterile water,that prevent slibing of catheter.
- These type of catheters can be use both short and long time period.
- These can cause urinary tract infection
- Which can wear out side of male penis.
- A tube is connected to the drainage bag to collect urine
- These are more comfortable and less risk of infection.
- Need to be change every day
- These type of catheters can cause skin irritation
3.Intermidiatted Catheter:- These type of catheters are also known Short term catheters, These type of catheter are use to immidiate emptying the urinary bladder after of before the surgical procedure.
- These are the in and out catheres.
- These type of catheters did not connected with collecting bag.
- Before applying intermidiatted catheres,a beg pan is needed
Complications of catheterization
- Urinary tract infection
- UTI bleeding (in case of urithral rupture)
- Fever
- Pain
- Cloudy urine due to pus formation
- Irritation in urinary tract
- Fouly smell from urine
- Lower back pain
- Bleeding in urinary tract
Equipments needed for Catheterization
In the procedure of Catheterization a nurse need 2 trays which are following
Tray no.1-
Tray no.1-
- Catheter
- Antiseptic solution
- Cotton swab
- Gause pieces
- Glove( 2 pairs)
- Lubricant gelly
Tray no. 2
- Non pathogenic syringe
- Sterile water
- Kideny tray
- Paper bag
- Uro bag (collecting bag)
- Makintosh(plastic cover)
Procedure:-
- before and after the nurse must wash his/her hand for prevention from infections
- collect all equipment at the bed side of patient
- Idebtify the patient with his/her wrist identity band
- Match it from documentations
- Wear gloves with aseptic teachnique
- Provide position to client
- for male patient provide supine
- for female patient provide supine position with the knees flexed and separated and feet flat on the bed,
- clean the groine area with a cotton swab and antisptic solution
- Insert lubricant jelly into the urinary tract and lubricant the tip of the catheter
- Now clinch the penis upword and insert the catheter slowly into the urithra
- When the catheter reached in the bladder than connect the uro bag and insert the distel water by help of syring.
- in urine collectes in the urobeg than it is in the bladder, if blood apper than cathter injured urithra
